Defending Your Value: Career Positioning for Leaders in the AI Era
Earlier today, I facilitated an exclusive virtual workshop for SF Tech Week, focusing on how tech leaders can defend their value and secure their career positioning in the AI era. We tackled a strange phenomenon happening in the current market: It has never been easier to be "visible," but it has never been harder to be seen.
The relevance of the topic was reinforced by the overwhelming 200+ RSVPs received, making the selection process incredibly difficult. Ultimately, I curated a room of 15 unique professionals to ensure a high-impact experience with meaningful peer discussion.
We fostered an action-oriented environment. Across our breakout sessions, these 15 leaders exchanged powerful ideas and completed over 1,600 minutes of total collaborative work. It was incredible to watch everyone actively pressure-test their messaging and confront a trap that is quietly costing talented professionals their next big opportunity: the "Beige-ification" of talent.
From the breakthroughs in our SF Tech Week session, here are four key shifts to ensure you project true credibility and remain indispensable.
1. Add Texture to Your Professional Brand
Texture is the antidote to a beige, predictable profile. It encompasses the non-work dimensions of your life that make you memorable, distinct, and uniquely qualified. We live multiple lives in a day, and those outside experiences actively shape our leadership DNA.
Take inventory of what you do outside your nine-to-five, whether you are a marathon runner, a parent, a non-profit board member, or a trained classical dancer. Map each of these passions to a professional skill, strength, or attitude. For example, a Technical Program Manager who runs marathons understands how to pace exhausted engineering teams so they do not hit a wall at mile twenty. Listen for these textured cues when networking to find instant common ground and stay memorable.
2. Name Your Superpower
Your superpower is the intersection of your passion and your natural talent. It is the unique edge that allows you to supercharge your performance and ramp up rapidly.
Move away from standard, replaceable job titles and focus on your true value add. A real estate professional's superpower is not selling homes, it is protecting clients from six-figure emotional mistakes. If you struggle to articulate your value without relying on dense industry jargon, try explaining what you do as if you were talking to a ten-year-old.
3. Upgrade Your Narrative from STAR to SOAR
The standard STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is no longer enough to capture executive attention. To stand out, you must upgrade your narrative architecture to the SOAR framework: Situation, Obstacle, Action, Relevance.
Identify the true obstacle you overcame, not just the basic task you were assigned. Replace standard result statements with universal business relevance. Do not just state that a bug was fixed; explain how your actions saved the team 400 hours annually by preventing release delays. Ensure you are clearly communicating how you impacted the bottom line, the team, or the business for every bullet point on your resume.
4. Become the Human in the Loop
Your core professional value is no longer tied to executing routine tasks. True value lies in your ability to navigate ambiguity, exercise judgment, and leverage human legacy knowledge.
Position yourself as a leader who sanity-tests edge cases and resolves complex human conflicts that AI simply cannot understand. Stop asking AI to create your professional brand from scratch. Instead, leverage it as a last-mile executive editor. Use a defined formula to pressure-test your messaging: define the Role, Content, Goal, Tone, and what to Avoid. For example, prompt the AI to act as a skeptical hiring manager, feed it your resume and a job description, and ask it to list three reasons it would not hire you.
Ready to Defend Your Value?
The market is currently operating in a state of structural vertigo, and standard corporate templates will fail you. If you are ready to stop blending into the sea of sameness and learn to translate a complex career history into a compelling case for your next major leap, the next step is to pressure-test your messaging.
