The Hidden Trap of Busyness: How I Finally Shifted from Burnout to True Output
Today I want to talk about "busy."
We often treat "busy" like a badge of honor, but for a long time, my busyness felt less like achievement and more like an anchor. I was a CEO, a single, all-consuming title that demanded a singular focus. My time was divided, yes, but it was divided between meetings, strategy sessions, and an ever-present, low-level hum of pressure to maintain the external identity of a C-Suite leader.
In that season, my time was full, but my inner tank was often running low.
Year-End Reflection: Are Your Resolutions Truly Yours?
As we wrap up the year, we naturally move into a time of reflection. We review the goals we hit (or missed) and, very soon, we'll start compiling those ambitious New Year's Resolutions.
But I challenge you to make this reflection a deep dive into radical honesty.
Before you commit to another set of externally defined goals—another promotion, another metric, another title—ask yourself: Are these resolutions truly aligned with my inner value system, or are they aligned with someone else’s expectation of me?
This question is deeply personal, and it came from my own difficult journey.
The CEO Clock vs. The Aligned Life
Let me give you a glimpse of my former time division. As a Strategy and Operations Leader who stepped in as CEO of a company facing financial challenges, my day was consumed by a singular, intense objective: survival and rapid scale.
I successfully transformed the business model, driving 75% gross margins and scaling revenue to $1M+ ARR in just six months. This was the world of securing major contracts with large established organizations. I was developing a Generative AI-powered platform and building and leading high-performing teams across the globe. It was a high-stakes, high-octane environment that demanded analytical precision (thank you, Engineering degree!) and ruthless efficiency. My time was split on what was urgent and essential for the bottom line.
Today, my schedule is arguably more packed. I am a dedicated Career & Business Coach, but I also serve as a Planning and Transportation Commissioner, sit on the Board of Directors for a local Education Foundation, a local school, volunteer as a Domestic Violence Client Advocate, and still find time to run half marathons and perform Indian classical dance at cultural festivals. Crucially, I also juggle the demands of being a mother to two elementary-aged kids.
Objectively, I am busier—my commitments are wildly diverse and span global business to local civic duty.
Yet, paradoxically, I am profoundly happier and feel less stress. Why the massive shift?
The Alignment Shift: The Lesson That Became My Mission
The difference lies not in the amount of time I have, but in the alignment of my value system.
When I was in the C-Suite, my energy was dedicated to the company's structure and mission. While I was committed, I was often working against my deepest personal strengths and passions, which are rooted in Organizational Behavior (my PhD from IIM Ahmedabad focused on this very subject!).
I learned the hard way that the core of who I am—a builder of communities, a strategist of human connection, and a believer in personalized potential—was being constrained. I was outputting effort, but it often led to internal burnout because my soul wasn't fully integrated into the work.
The moment my work became aligned with my innate strengths and personal values, everything changed. I shifted from just executing strategy to coaching others to design their own. I channeled my passion for building inclusive and sustainable organizational ecosystems (a theme of my career) into Ecosystem Development for my clients. Now, even when I am busy, I experience more output than burnout. The diverse things I do—from coaching leaders through significant transitions to advocating for marginalized voices—don't drain me; they fill me. They are authentic expressions of myself, which makes the hard work feel like fulfilling purpose.
This personal journey—the difficult pivot from successful but unfulfilled CEO to busy but joyful coach and community leader—is the exact reason I do the work I do today. It is my personal evidence that a truly successful professional path is one that is deeply aligned with your unique self.
What Aligned Work Feels Like:
It Taps into Flow: Tasks that use your natural gifts feel easier and more efficient, creating better results in less time.
It’s Sustainable: You can maintain a high pace because your identity is integrated, not compartmentalized.
It Generates Joy: The energy you invest is replenished by the satisfaction of doing work that truly matters to you.
